ITM Forums (mis)quoted in Bindeez toy scandal

It’s no secret that many of the ‘big guys’ trawl the ITM Forums; artists, promoters, record labels… we had an inkling that some of the major media outlets have their eye on things too, but as of today we’re sure!

The scandal surrounding yesterday’s recall of the Bindeez craft toy – parts of which are reported to metabolise into party drug GHB (aka ‘fantasy’ or ‘liquid ecstasy’) – spilled over into the ITM Forums, with several posters joking that they’d be heading to the nearest toy store to snatch up one of the remaining boxes before they were removed from sale.

Keen to perpetuate public outrage on the matter, Shaun Davies of Ninemsn directly quoted inthemix (a “club culture website”, for those playing at home), doing his best to make the ITM community look like a bunch of desperate drug-taking fiends. The news item HERE quoted the following:

“Right, just say for example… that one wanted to purchase some of these magic beads off a fictional online auction site before they all disappear without a trace. Would one, for example, assume that you could safely consume these magic beads and experience the, um, magic? I mean these magic beads don’t actually contain G but they do turn into G when processed by our bodies, correct?”

Admittedly irony has always been really tough to convey via the written word, but we would have thought that the blatant tongue-in-cheek nature of that post would have made it pretty clear to Mr Davies that they were taking the piss. The Photoshopped pics of Bindi Irwin with lasers shooting from her mouth could have been an indicating factor? Obviously it wasn’t enough to get in the way of a good story!

You can check the forum thread in question HERE, and be sure to take a look at the TV ad for Bindeez, which is scary enough… we can’t imagine anyone thinking it would be a good idea to eat them:

To robbz I'm pretty sure I remember them saying the girl was 10 years old, as I had the same thought... Maybe she had swallowed them before and was now addicted to them. (sarcasm)

Shaun Davies voted Best Journalist for 2006.... later found to contain high levels of bullshit and lacking wit. NineMSN would like to issue a recall of all comments people have bought.

typical. I think there should be laws against quoting from websites- especially member based message boards. Things can be taken SOOOOOOOOO out of context!
