The second annual Playground Weekender is fast approaching, so if you were wondering what festival organisers had in store to keep punters entertained over the 3-day musical extravaganza other than the long list of stunning bands and DJs, take a look at this!
The Wall – this year’s Playground Weekender will feature a massive art installation known as ‘The Wall’. 20 metres long, it will feature artwork created live over the weekend by 50 different artists in multiple mediums. At the end of the festival the artwork will be auctioned off with proceeds going to Heaps Decent. Heaps Decent is the initiative set up by Diplo in Australia to give indigenous and disadvantaged youth the opportunity to participate in music workshops with international music artists and work in a studio with state of the art production equipment to develop their talents in musicianship, songwriting, production, DJing, and more.
Permission to Shine – If you’re after entertainment of the quirkier nature, the Permission to Shine cabaret tent will be ready and waiting for you with a broad spectrum of live oddities, quizzes, and more. If you have even the faintest of exhibitionist streaks, the interpretive dance contest is also back with heats on Saturday and a final on Sunday. The more inhibited are welcome to sit back, observe and enjoy.
Weekender Radio – This year’s Playground Weekender will have its own radio station for those who want the music to continue after the DJs and bands have finished. Hosted by the Soulshaker Crew, the station will run throughout the night with interviews and sets from local and international bands and DJs, as well as morning games and more. Bring your own radios to tune in. Note: RADIOS ONLY! No other music systems can be brought onto site. No radios or music of any type can be used in the ‘quiet camping’ area.
Fancy Dress Party – Saturday is fancy dress day at the Playground Weekender, and we’d like to encourage everyone to join in. There’s no theme so come along as whatever takes your fancy – be it a pirate, priest, panther, politician, whatever! If you’re not organised in advance there’s the Fancy Shmancy costume hire stall on site, as well as a stall selling finishing touches like feather boas and fake moustaches. There’ll also be make-up artists to put the final touches to your look.
NB. Save 20% on costume hire and get the best pick of the goods by booking your outfit in advance – just pop down to Fancy Shmancy’s Bondi Beach store (www.fancyshmancy.com.au)to choose from over 5,500 costumes, pre-book your special outfit and then pick it up at the festival site.
Toni & Guy – Thought camping festivals meant bad hair for three days? Think again. A makeshift Toni & Guy salon will be present on the festival site offering blow drys, straightening, and styling throughout the weekend. Whether you want a dramatic up-do to compliment your Saturday fancy dress outfit or just fancy a spruce up, they’re sure to have you looking top notch in no time.
Cinema – After a hard day’s dancing, what could be better than relaxing on a comfy sofa in front of a great movie? Movies at the Playground outdoor cinema run throughout the night and once again there will be cups of tea and late night comfort food to enjoy whilst you sit back and unwind.
Keep up to date on all things Playground Weekender with ITM’s festival page!
