After a blinding showing in Brisbane and Perth last weekend, the Future Music Festival continued its jaunt across the country, with the Sydney event on Saturday, and Melbourne and Adelaide following on Sunday and Monday respectively. The Sydney photos are already online, with the other states to follow shortly: keep your eyes peeled to ITM for the latest coverage as it comes to hand.

FMF scored a #1 placing last year as the ITM’s favorite festival, and going on the feedback in the forums, the punters once again left satisfied this year: in spite of the day being marred by some issues with the production, which unfortunately didn’t live up to the high standards set by the previous two year’s events. Most notable was the crushing disappointment felt by both the crowd and Markus Schultz himself when sound issues prevented his performance from being all that it could have been – the blow all the more heavy in light of how rapturously the progressive trance heavyweight had been received in the Brisbane and Perth. Markus was seen angrily motioning for the sound to be turned up during his performance, expressing his frustration later when he jumped on the mic to address the crowd. “Clearly there’s been some issues with the sound today,” he told the crowd, “but I promise you all that when I come back next time, we’ll be turning the volume right up.”
Otherwise, the quality of the music during the day managed to live up to the immense amount of talent on the lineup. Elite Force and Roger Sanchez kept the crowd enthralled earlier in the day, while the charismatic Sven Vath effortlessly drew everyone’s attention when he hit the Fanklub stage early in the evening – he’s simply one of the most talked about dance artists to ever tour Australia, and on Saturday he was in full swing with his usual antics. “Sven Vath is the funniest fucker ever,” claimed one ITMer in the forums. “How was he with the drum stick from Data Rock banging the drums behind the decks… Seeing him skull that bottle of champagne and spit it back at the crowd was gold. Oh yeah, and he played epic driving tech.”
While Vath’s presence might have owned the festival, the other DJ performance that got everyone talking, and standing out as one of the highlights, was that of progressive house veteran John Digweed. In spite of a lukewarm reception in the other states, it was all guns firing in Sydney and the crowd was blown away. Delivering a superbly crafted 2-hours of driving progressive and pumping minimal/tech, he proved once again that he’s the master of programming a set – before turning the bliss levels right up when he closed with his own seminal classic Heaven Scent.
And while sound issues again meant that you had to be very, very close to the stage in order to hear the music properly, nothing could take away from the world-beating live show of the Chemical Brothers. Thousands had been overwhelmed by the mighty spectacle of the UK duo at the previous evening’s sideshow (check out the ITM photos), but an even bigger crowd swarmed to the main stage to catch them on Saturday. With the visuals synced tightly with the music, it’s simply not possible to convey the impact of the show unless you’ve had a chance to check it out yourself. If there’s anyone who can topple the mystique of Daft Punk, it’s these guys.

Worst gig of my life. The production standards were high and the performances were faultless, but the crowd was nasty and really spoiled my day. A lot of really bad vibes at Sydney that day. I mean, what kind of person goes to a dance party looking for a fight? Only in Maroubra

hate to say it but the chems did not even come close to topping Daft Punk and I would consider myself a bigger fan of the Chems. DP are in a league of their own.

wat a gig been going to festivals for 17 years now ,easily up there with the best ,the crowd at main stage was bliss ,heaps of room all day,,, roger sanchez was good but his sound is a little more tribal these days ,,his set at home was much better the week before,,bring on the 8 hour set,,, ,digweed who i dont like tore iit to pieces very impressed.. the chem and daft punk are on the same level live , but the chemical brothers have so many more brillant tracks over more cds than daft punk will ever have FACT ,,,fuzzy should take a good look at themselves and bring more quality and why dont they sort there toilet situation out ,,,future u rock

What is with the crowd?? The whole experience of these music festivals are losing their touch. Maybe i was at the wrong place and the wrong time, and saw the wrong DJ, but when ticket prices aren't cheap, some quality should be demanded. My 2cents

My only regret is leaving Evil Nine to be insulted by the ego of Sven Vath, the wanka was in front of his decks the hole time leaving some of the most mundane and un-inspired beats rolling. He was getting more cheers from his groupies behind him than from the crowd in front of him. They can have 'im. The Chems saved the day and rocked it hard and fast, the visuals were epic, that clown was so vivid and freaky.

I have been going to festivals for 10 years and this event by far was one of the most dissapointing as far as the crowd goes. I managed to get in to see Sanchez and was generally happy until a fight between the Lebs and the Kiwis broke out and some Kiwi got his lip smashed apart so to avoid the agro of the muscle men with the shirts off look (steroids and Ice dont mix) I decided to take a position towards the back near the exit gate corridor, only to be shoved around by a groups of chicks (kids more like it) who obviously couldnt handle drugs. It seemd as though a portion of the crowd didnt realise what moderation of drug intake means, whats with this, if you cant handle the gear go to a blue light disco kiddies. Towards the end at the Chems set (I was sooooooooo glad I saw them the night before) one very young girl, who was EXTREMELY high as a kite decided to rub herself up against any guy she could find even though some of these guys had girlfriends standing right in front of her, I hate to think what happened to her when I left. Dont get me wrong, I am not trying to put a down on this but please.....leave the agro and shiothouse attitude at home. It used to be a lot more fun and non aggressive 10 years ago.....Digweed impressed me and the Chems where just as good as they have always been, these event should really have a minimum age limit of say 21 that way it will give the kiddies a little more time to grow up before they can handle a festival of this kind

yes chill dog i agree with you on some points you made but that age sterotype is down right crap, sure there is alot of "teeny boppers" who go for the social and to get f- ed up on drugs but then there are about 70% of the under 21's who actually love the music and go to these festivals for all the right reasons. FMF was fantastic and all in all i had a great day besides a few tiny things that pissed me off one being the agro crowed that seemed to be everywhere, the lack of food stands AND how we couldn't get into the main area until 1:30, what was with that?? i sore goodwill's face at the end of his 10 minute set and he didnt look to impressed. i dont know how many officals we asked for the location of the clock room and they said " um i dont think we have one" " this festival is to big to have a clock room" or just a "i dont know" even on the map they had a clock room key but it was no where to be found on the map, luckily for us we found it inside the racecourse building. anyway enough of my winging i'm just glade that rain went away and the sun was out for a great day, the chems just topped the day off!!!!! best ever.

I loved John Digweed personally. He didn't even read the crowd though and played pretty much whatever he wanted. I'm a massive fan so clearly bias. Pretty impressed with the sound quality overall and yes the layout was well thought out. Line up for Silent Disco was massive however, so I missed out. Tear Tear.

I've been going to festivals since I was 8 years old (there are no age restrictions at glastonbury!) and now I am 30 so that is a lot of festival going experience, and Future was one of the worst I have been too. Not so the music. (Laidback Luke was awesome, and Potbellez played a decent set and how good were the chemical Brothers!) but there was one nasty vibe in the crowd. A guy tried to pick a fight with me for no reason at all - and I am a (very placid) girl. There seemed to be a lot of aggro, and problems causing a bad vibe. Def some dodgy drugs going around.....

Also have to aggree abou the comments about the croud, not what it used to be, people need to go for the music and not just to get fucked up and cause trouble.

This would definitely have to be the worse festival of all time. The only good act was Roger Sanchez. When festivals become this big and this fluro and electro and everyone is running around off their faces it doesnt make it an interesting festival. Not to add the organisers have no idea how to organise a festival, when trying to exit the premises after a very dissapointing set by The Chemical Brothers, we were not allowed to exit any of the exits, this was the worse festival ever adn they just keep getting worse as years progress. Bring back quality, not quantity! Future Entertainment and Fuzzy dont know how to entertain the masses, only to the minority which is Electro, Fluro, 18-19 year olds.

You guys are all extremely jaded. If you have a problem with crowds, then don't go to festivals. There is wankers everywhere, so if you put 40,000 people in one place, obviously you are gonna get a bunch of them, its basic statistics --- just try to avoid it and have a good time. I have been to dozens of festivals and I thought Future Music Festival was great fun. I didn't have any problem with the crowd.. I was with a great group of friends all day and we all had a great time. I believe you make your own fun at these festivals, if you constantly focus on what other people are doing, then obviously you aren't gonna have a good time. If you have a problem with young people at festivals, I recommend you don't go. Festivals, especially FMF, is marketed towards young, 18-25yr old, people... if you want an older crowd, go to Blues Fest or something... My only complaint about the festival was the sound levels... atrocious all day... other than that it was fucking awesome. Bring on 2009!

WOW, Future is the Worst Party that i have been too in my life!! And i have been too quite alot! First experience at the Music Bowl and I will never go there again! The venue was "rediculasly over crouded", the people there were just all pretentious Barbie's and meet head's, the facilities to stay out of the sun were pathetic, the amenities were a disgrace and never clean and not enough for the oversized croud and too top this off all the DJ's played like shit!!! I have stayed clear of FutureEntertainment parties for a reason and thats because generally they are terrible!! I thought that i would give this ago seeing some of the great DJ's playing and sadly they lived upto there pathetic reputaion! WORST PARTY EVER!!! I WANT MY $125.00 BACK

all you guys bagging out how shit is was must of been completely off ya face, no wonder the crowd had a bad vibe because it had people like yourselves in it, made your mind up at the beginning of the day and stayed like that.......enjoy the music, the only way u get into bad shit like that is if you go looking for it........i had no worries all day, enjoyed the music and went with the flow like any time at a festival. if you dont like future music, dont go, we dont want u there, i thought it was awsome and cant wait for next year.

Future was great. encountered a few losers but thats wat happens everywhere. I also made a few new friends

all round good day...Markus Schulz was awsome apart form the sound issues. the massive walk to the main stage was a bit of a comedown. there were a few more agro people than usual. my guess is a mix of steroids and ice

Worst EMF gig to date. Hey here's an idea, lets have a big music festival where we divide the venue in half, seperate it with a footbridge 10m wide. Cram in so many people that about 1/4 of the patronage wont even be able to be on the same side of the venue, let alone see or hear the headline act... First and last time I ever go to a DME in Sydney, to many raging knobs. Overpriced, crap sound, only 2 DJ's sounded half decent (Koala and Pee Wee), the rest filled the room with contrived bang bang, missing in substance, clarity or vission. Thanks for reminding me why I bailed on the scene when I did Sydney! PLUFR, more like PFFT!

Very very rarely have I seen agro at a festival or house music venue. WTF is going on? And more and more bad performances by big-name international acts (not all of course). I used to love going out and festivals to bits but lately it's been more fun playing the decks at home or a mates. Better music (personal tastes not withstanding) and no f/wits or $9 drinks!
