Following the successful launch of their ‘green ticket’ option last year, Splendour In The Grass will once again offer punters the chance to off-set their carbon footprint for the 2008 festival. They’ve teamed up with the crew at Climate Friendly again in an effort to neutralise the festival’s emissions. In 2007 there were 5,425 Splendour punters who took the option to purchase a ‘green ticket’; this equated to 31% of the event’s capacity.

Last year 1,000 tonnes of CO2 were offset and $18,987 was raised from ticket sales. These funds were invested, through Climate Friendly, on renewable energy (wind farms), which provide a long-term solution to reliance on fossil fuels. For 2008 the Splendour crew will take it one step further, with punters able to offset their carbon emissions from the entire 48 hour festival period (not just their travel to the event). It’s calculated that Australians generation an average of 77kg of greenhouse gas each day, and for an extra $7 Splendour punters will be able to buy a ‘green ticket’ which neutralise their festival experience for both days (144kg).

Splendour tickets go onsale Thursday May 22nd at 9am exclusively from www.qjump.com.au. If you missed out on the festival announcement check the lineup here!

Splendour need to take responsibility themselves and use some of the funds from ticket sales to do this, instead of guilt tripping the customers.

Why not make every ticket a green ticket? As this would include the people only traveling a short distance to the festival it could mean that the whole festival could have a positive outcome not just to be neutral...
