No one can deny that The Potbelleez scored themselves the runaway hit of summer 2007/2008 with their sing-along anthem ‘Don’t Hold Back’, but it’s amazing to consider just how far the track has invaded the popular music consciousness. The single – released on Australian label Vicious – has now been certified Platinum by ARIA, meaning it has sold in excess of 70,000 copies. No mean feat in today’s shrinking market for single sales.
Pete Tong has now picked up on the success of the single, playing it three weeks in a row on his influential BBC Radio One show, and the track also went #1 in Germany’s dance charts recently. With acts like The Presets and Cut Copy going to #1 on the album chart in the past few months and Sneaky Sound System breaking all sorts of sales records with their singles and albums, it definitely shows that there’s a healthy amount of support for locally produced dance music.
The Potbelleez release their next single soon, which will coincide with the release of their ‘Sessions 5’ mix on Ministry of Sound. Stay tuned to ITM for updates.
