The launch of the Australian club scene’s most anticipated yearly poll is fast approaching, with voting set to open in late June for the sixth annual inthemix50. Widely recognised as the yardstick by which professional DJs around the country measure their stature each year, it seems the reigning #1 has had enough of the limelight and wants to see the crown handed on to someone new in 2008.
Having taken the top spot in 2006 and 2007, when speaking with inthemix recently at the launch of his new Sweat It Out mix CD and record label Ajax let us know he’s ready to take a step back from the pressures associated with being DJing’s top dog. “I don’t want to seem ungrateful, but it’s just I don’t like the adage where you become [known as] the #1 DJ rather than [known for] what you play,” the new label boss explained. “I’d actually like to withdraw… [but] I know inthemix won’t let me!”
Over the first three years of the inthemix50 the #1 position was held by Kid Kenobi, before Ajax toppled him as electro rose to the fore in 2006. It’s anyone’s guess whether Ajax will maintain his rank this year, and with stiff competition from fast rising stars like Dirty South, The Potbelleez, Tydi and the Stafford Brothers, the outcome is going to be more exciting than ever before.
