Last week ITM heard murmurs that one of Australia’s most recognisable dance scene identities had made the seemingly shocking decision to change his nom de plume. Word on the street is that Mark Dynamix – he of mega-selling Ministry of Sound compilation fame – will now go under the name MDX. Could it be true? We decided to do some investigating…
“I’ve decided to make the change in response to the change in direction my music and production has taken,” Mark told inthemix when we tracked him down to get the story. “It’s a new project with a different sound to my past productions, so it’s only fitting that it bears a new name.”
Fair enough, we thought to ourselves. But why, after 15 years in the game, would one feel the time was right to wipe the slate clean and start with a new title? “A lot of people have found it hard to grasp the notion that there is more to what I do and a greater level of depth musically than mixing high-profile compilation CDs,” Mark explained.
“I think there’s always a stigma attached to a recording artist’s past history; people still expect me to play trance records sometimes when I play in some areas of Australia! It’s the same with bands; you get pigeon holed into a particular mindset and it’s difficult to change everyone’s perception.”
So there you have it! But, before you jump over to the ITM Whatson looking for upcoming MDX gigs, be aware that Mark is using the name as a production alias only, for the time being at least. “The first MDX release will be on my own label Long Distance Recordings which launches officially in July.”
Stay tuned to ITM for updates.
