The community response to Earthdance in Sydney last weekend has been vocal to say the least; it only takes one look at the discussion in the ITM forums to see that!
Following the official post-event press release issued by Earthdance, which explained the motivations for closing off the festival early (it had reached full capacity), one of the event’s headline acts have now spoken out on their anger at missing their scheduled performance. Future Classic’s wonderfully unique Theatre of Disco were notified they wouldn’t be taking to the stage only 45 minutes before they were programmed to appear.
“Earthdance is such a great festival about peace,” said the band’s bass/synth player Oli Chang. “This was going to be our first time playing to so many thousands of people so naturally we were really disappointed.” In no way directing their dismay towards the event organisers, Theatre of Disco instead feel the decision to close Earthdance early was an overreaction on behalf of the authorities.
“Sydney already suffers from over controlling police who create further dissension by shutting down events,” vocalist James Brennan remarked. “I understand that police feel a need to prevent trouble but it was clear that the risks presented to the community and individuals were minimal. The people of Sydney desperately need free events. I cannot think of another event for young people and all people who enjoy dance music.”

I saw them at Sydney Park in 2006, that year they were on before midday. It must've been their turn to get a "peak time" set.. they're obviously upset they couldn't get it!

yeah the cops really farked up earthdance this year... there were sooooooooooooo many of them... and it was so controlled... well done piggas!!! nice way to ruin an awesome event.. they should take it back to syd park i reckon...

this was the worse earthdance i have EVER been too, and it wasnt cos of the cops. did any of you actually see the crowd? it was pretty much the loosers u see hanging around central and the lads. thats were the festival went bad, they needed to have better door security. i think they need to bring in a new rule of NO LADS!!!!!! like they did at utopia, like honestly does anyone like them?

Earthdance, no fennce, no bag search, beautiful sunshine, picnics, byo allowed that is what I remember of all my good experiences there. Made no attempt this year so am not surpirsed as to what resulted. Seems that a small minority of people tend to highlight themseleves to the police and they need to take action. Be responsible in terms of how much you drink and your actions then the Earthdance can return to how it was in the beginning. This change needs to happen so we can continue to support out local talent.

wow so that's why there were so many people on the streets around strawberry hills when I went past at 5:30! Needless to say, this probably wouldn't have happened if it was still at Sydney Park. Fingers crossed the construction is done and dusted by next year.
