inthemix's 2008 ARIA Awards wrap up

As previewed on inthemix last week the 2008 ARIA Awards were shaping up to be an exciting night for fans of dance music and hip hop, with more artists than ever before nominated across a diverse range of categories.

Sitting atop the tree was indie-dance’s most revered duo, The Presets, who walked away from the ceremony with three awards. Their win for Best Dance Release shocked no one, but scoring Best Group and Album Of The Year was certainly a coup. “Six years ago we started making this weird music because it was fun. We’re thrilled you people like it too,” said Julian Hamilton, frontman of The Presets.

Performing their hit single My People, the band had the crowd’s full attention with custom designed outfits by Sydney fashion designer Romance Is Born. If someone had told us last week that they had a nurave version of George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic in the works we would have laughed, but with a troupe of demented Mickey Mouse dancers clad in black and white joining them, it just seemed to work.

It was a night of disappointment for some, however, with electro-pop’s newest chart sensation Sam Sparro leaving empty handed despite being nominated for five awards. He wasn’t the only one to miss out, with The Potbelleez also losing out in their three categories.
