Booka Shade's Sydney stage invasion

Earlier today inthemix caught up with Walter and Arno of Booka Shade as they took some time out from their tour of Australia. Kicking back on the rooftop of their hotel in Sydney, be sure to keep your eye out for our full video interview in the coming weeks, as they talk indepth about their latest album The Sun & The Neon Light, as well as experiences on their current tour down under.

Having played two shows already – Brisbane’s Stereosonic Festival on Saturday afternoon and then their own headline Sydney Satellite show later that night – Walter and Arno had some rather funny stories to tell. Anyone who was at the Enmore Theatre show in Sydney may have spotted a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it stage invasion, with a crazed fan who got a bit too caught up in the moment unwittingly causing their equipment some damage.

“I thought that the equipment fell on the floor because of the vibrations, and that’s why I was angry at my technicians,” Walter explained. “But then I saw that it was impossible that it fell down [itself]. My technicians told me it was a guy, and that he ran into my equipment. He was so fast we didn’t see him! We’ve had the situation many times… we’re sometimes afraid that something even worse could happen. The bouncer was sleeping I think, and in 10 seconds he was onstage. One of my keyboards was broken, so I bought a new one!”

Of course it’s all par for the course with Booka Shade, with their live performance well honed having played literally hundreds of shows over the past few years. “It’s great to have such enthusiastic crowd,” laughed Arno when speaking about the Sydney incident. “Many times I’ve watched concerts by other bands and thought ‘obviously they [the crowd] don’t like it very much?’ they don’t shout or jump. At our shows there seems to be even more energy, and we’re happy about that.”

Booka Shade continue their Australian tour this weekend:

Thu Nov 27 – Transit Bar, Canberra
Fri Nov 28 – Prince Bandroom, Melbourne
Sat Nov 29 – Stereosonic, Adelaide
Sat Nov 29 – Stereosonic, Melbourne
Sun Nov 30 – Stereosonic, Perth

Haha I actually remember looking at Walter when half his setup fell down and he certainly look pissed. Was the guy who knocked it over the same guy who was dancing with his shirt off on the right hand side of the stage? Apart from that Booka Shade went fucking off, was so fantastic to see them after hearing their live set from Glastonbury. Japanese Popstars were good fun too, so loud and thrashy :D
