On a picture-perfect Sydney night, the mighty Underworld brought in 2009 at Bondi Beach. As far as upsets go, the last-minute cancellation of Swedish powerhouse Eric Prydz could’ve been crippling. However, with one of electronic music’s most esteemed acts playing an extended two hour set, Shore Thing proved to be a true spectacle. Frontman Karl Hyde was as magnetic as ever, the classics were abundant and Born Slippy provided that rare kind of ‘midnight moment’.

Elsewhere, 11th hour fill-in Boys Noize inspired dancing and grumbling in equal measure, while The Presets capped off a knockout year with a tight and banging closing set. The location, naturally, shared equal billing with Underworld – and who could’ve asked for more festive weather? 2009’s headliner will need to work hard to top this one.
