Global Gathering is one of the world’s most loved dance events, and its debut into the Australian festival market last year was definitely one of the biggest causes for excitement among dance fans in the last 12 months. Now, ITM can confirm that Global Gathering will indeed be an annual affair, with Mark James of Future Entertainment revealing it will be back in 2009 – and this time, with an increased focus on the dance and electronic side of the equation.
“As soon as Future Music Festival finishes up, we’ll be working on Global Gathering for this year as well, so that’ll be returning again,” Mark James told ITM, indicating that we’ll see a shift in the tour’s musical programming. “This year we’re going to go with more of a ‘massive DJ’ lineup, and stick to having Future Music Festival as both a live and DJing tour… With [Mark] Ronson and Kraftwerk, it didn’t really hit the marketplace right. We thought we’d try something different, and something different at that time of year with the economic situation didn’t really hit the buttons. But I think we’ll nail it this year though.”
Mark also spoke candidly on the obstacles that Future, Ministry of Sound and Angel Music Group faced in bringing Global Gathering to Australia for the first time. “We lived and learned with that one,” he remarked. “Right up until around early October we were selling really well, and then the doom and gloom of the economic depression hit and our ticket sales slumped by around 30 per cent over a couple of days. So we really got caught up in that doom and gloom situation. But it was still a great festival. OK, we didn’t do fantastic but everyone enjoyed who was there. This year we’ll come back bigger and better with it.”
