With more than $6,000 in shit hot studio equipment up for grabs, as well as an official digital release on the Bang Gang 12 Inches label – and, of course, the glory of being named “winner!” – the stakes were indeed high for the recent Spank Records remix competition.
So who won the top honour? As the saying goes, there can be only one (although in this case the ‘one’ winner turned out to be a duo!), so massive congratulations go out to Jad Lee and Dominique Bird of Queensland, whose remix under the moniker Mitzi saw them crowned the ultimate champions.
Their disco re-edit of the Damn Arms single Destination will get a release on Bang Gang 12 Inches in early July, alongside remixes from Munk, Deriedas, Jaunt, Cassian, Zigguratz and the Bang Gang boys themselves. They also walk away with a fantastic pool of prizes including:
Ableton Live 8, Reason 4, Traktor Pro, Novation Remote 25SL keyboard, Stanton SCS 3D MIDI controller, Pioneer CDJ200, Sennheiser HD25 headphones and CX300 earphones, UDG Creator Serato bag, Pacemaker, Ksubi Gift voucher, a Fuzzy membership and 2 VIP passes to Parklife.
You can stream their winning remix here through ITM-FM, and have a read of our mini-interview with them below to find out a bit more.
MINI-INTERVIEW WITH MITZI; REMIX COMP WINNERS
Congrats on winning the comp guys; how does it feel to beat out a few hundred other hopefuls?
We were happy with the end result. We don’t record sax and flute for any old remix!
I read that it’s the first proper track you’ve both worked on together. Obviously this success will spur you on to continue working together?
We actually started making music together a little bit back under another alias, “Moods”, then we morphed into a band called “BMX”. We decided to do this remix under a new alias so there weren’t any expectations. People didn’t get disappointed because it wasn’t the “BMX” sound. We both listen to a lot of old disco and house, and Mitzi is more down those lines.
Your remix has a real disco flavour, which is obviously a sound that’s doing big things in the scene right now. How long have you been on the disco train, and who are some of your influences?
We both love old disco, Italo, whatever… Chaz Jankel, Cerrone, Crown Height Affair, D-Train and all those edits and remixes from guys like Ron Hardy, Larry Levan, Tom Moulton, Shep Pettibone. In terms of newer music, labels like Eskimo, Tirk, I’m a Cliche, DFA, Dissident, there is so much good new music. We like much more than disco and dance music though, we don’t sit under one umbrella.
The prizes were no doubt a big drawcard for many who entered. What piece of equipment are you most looking forward to getting your hands on?
I think we’ll have fun with the Novation keyboard.
