Two of Perth’s most respected dance music figures have put their collective efforts into a new record label named Illegal Cargo Records. At the helm are underground house afficionados Dave Miller and DJ Adam Kytka, and they are aiming to fill a void they see in the Australian musical landscape.
Kytka has a resume as long as the Missipi River, having spun at every major Perth club over the past 7 years and supported superstars like Mark Farina, Kaskade, Derrick Carter and Cassius. He is currently a resident at Level 10 Laundry at Geisha, and has played many festivals including We Love Ministry of Sound and Future Music Festival.
Miller has been producing since he was a teenager with his first release in 2007 on Singapore based label Dustpan Records, which received support from Fetish Records/Jackin Tracks head honcho Joey Youngman. Shortly after requests came through for remixes and more original productions which were signed to labels such as Lost My Dog(UK), Motion Music(USA), Booth Trax(Turkey) and Digi-Funk Records(UK)
Their first release is called I’m Affected, produced by Miller with the vocal talents of Kelly Hayden. The package will come with Arco and Homero Espinosa remixes and is due out at the end of August.
Kytka says that there are vitually no avenues for Australian underground house producers to get their material heard. “There is Sly City out of Adelaide and Rythmn City in Melbourne which are the only two labels putting out the kind of underground Chicago and jackin house sound in Australia. We’d just like to be another platform for hard working producers to get their tracks a commercial release because there are some really talented producers in this country.”
Catch the Illegal Cargo Records launch party at Geisha on Saturday August 1.
