With the recent news about the demise of the 2009/10 iterations of Global Gathering and Trance Energy, it is welcome news that Perth will be premiering a new boutique festival for October this year. It is only dedicated hip-hop, drum n’ bass and dubstep festival in the Southern hemisphere and will be headlined by some of the heaviest hitters in their chosen genres.
Low:Fi will be a combined labour of love from the talented crews at Blender and Naras under the banner of Knowledge Music and will be held on Sunday the 25th of October. To be held over three areas in Aberdeen St Northbridge, Low:Fi brings back the original block party street festival vibe utilising the Aberdeen Hotel, The Shed and featuring a main stage set up in the street similar to the set up of the first couple of Parklife’s before they outgrew the capacity.
Spearheading the hip hop division will be none other than New York hip hop legend NaS. At the top of the rap game since debut album Illmatic in ‘94, Nas brings with him a wealth of experience to a formidable lineup of hip hop artists that include Chali 2na of Jurassic 5 fame and DJ Qbert and MC Supernatural together performing their live freestyle battle routine.
The drum n bass contingent will consist of Bristol’s TC and Jakes, Netherlands noisehead trio Noisia and Perth’s favourite duo Calyx and Teebee. For the dubsteppers, bad man Coki, one half of the infamous Digital Mystikz and founder of DMZ Label will be backed up by the subsonic sounds of Loefah and Hench.
In providing a new and unique experience to the Perth festival circuit, Low:Fi will be truly a festival for the underground that will no doubt have a lot of punters relishing the thought of escaping the usual festival crowd.
