It’s the question that’s been on many peoples’ lips over the last few months. Where on Earth is Nevereverland? With the majority of the summer’s festival and major events announcements already with us – indeed, this week saw the arrival of Future Music Festival’s first lineup, and that kicks off in late February 2010! – the in-house summer festival from local label heroes Modular has thus far been MIA.
After debuting in 2007 with Australian debut of Daft Punk’s sensory expanding pyramid and returning again in 2008 for a stripped-back, value-for-money summer love-in with Australian champs The Presets and Cut Copy as well international stars like The Whitest Boy Alive and Hercules & Love Affair, the team over at Modular announced the festival would be back again 2009 with a suitably enigmatic news update back in July that Nevereverland’s “magic carpet ride would continue”. Yet after that flurry of activity, its current absence seems that much more concerning.
With speculation on the inthemix forums tipping the festival to bow out for 2009, ITM has been on the case with a novelty magnifying glass in hand, doing our best to get any information on the whereabouts of the beloved festival.
Whilst the Modular crew have declined to comment on the fate of Nevereverland, when ITM got some interview time with Jaime Doom from Modular golden boys The Bang Gang Deejays earlier today to chat about his offshoot label, Bang Gang 12 Inches’ new compilation, we pressed the club stalwart for any information about the festival.
“I really have no idea what is happening with Nevereverland at this stage,” Doom said, echoing public confusion. “I think the two biggest unknowns out there are Nevereverland and where the new Avalanches record is…Maybe if it goes ahead they’ll be there, but at this stage I really don’t know.”
Although we’re no closer to discovering the details behind Nevereverland, we wouldn’t be surprised if the shroud of secrecy it’s been kept under isn’t more buzz savvy from the Modular crew, who’re waiting in the wings with some sort of grand surprise. Guess we’ll just have to keep holding our breath for more.
