Modular golden girl Ladyhawke has had a pretty amazing run of late, hasn’t she? Having released her self titled debut back in the late stages of 2008, the girl behind the moniker, Pip Brown, crossed over in a big way, amassing fans from electronic, rock and pop quarters, and being rewarded with an admirable four ARIA nominations for the 2009 awards. But as we pointed out when we originally revealed the nominations last month, Brown is actually a New Zealander, making her ARIA nods quite curious. It seems others have been confused about the kiwi’s nominations, with many industry figures kicking up a stink in defiance.
It’s a weird scenario, considering we’re usually quick to claim talented kiwis as our own here in Australia, but people have thrown small scale dummy spits over the fact that Brown, who has applied for Australian residency, spent the bulk of 2008’s ARIA voting period outside of the country.
“It’s a total storm in a teacup,” Modular’s head honcho Steve Pavlovic told Billboard of the drama. “She’s lived in Australia since 2003, has maintained residence in Australia since 2006. And she’s having a global career, which means she has to tour the world. Good luck to her.”
Meanwhile, Ladyhawke herself spoke out about the uproar around her ARIA nominations last week, giving off more of that humble approachability that we love her for.
“I didn’t realise there was any controversy about it,” she said in an interview with The Sydney Morning Herlad. “Some people aren’t happy, which is fair enough, I completely understand … but I’m the last person that would want this to be the case. It made me a feel a bit sick. I am sorry that so many people have bad feelings towards me because the Australian music scene is something that’s sort of supported me and been so warm towards me over the last number of years. I was just really saddened.”
Whilst industry jibes may continue to permeate, there’s no stopping the Ladyhawke juggernaut from rolling on, with Ladyhawke set to perform at the awards night, this November 26th. In the meantime, Ladyhawke is still touring the country with disco-dons The Swiss and you catch the shows at the dates below.
