What music shook you to your very foundations this year? We’re in the closing days of 2009, and here at ITM we thought it was the perfect time to reflect on some of the finest music that reached our iPods over other the past 12 months, and to highlight which albums and compilations really shook things up and made an impact.

Reflecting for a moment on what we were listening to this year, in the clubs and on our home stereos – there was no new electronic craze that swept across the globe and turned the clubbing world upside down. However, that’s by no means a bad thing – if you want beautiful music, just throw on a copy of Way Out West’s We Love Machine. If you want groundbreaking, look no further than Joris Voorn’s Balance mix. If you want sublime indie-dance, then Phoenix have got you sorted. If you’re after explosive dancefloor tunes, Deadmau5 is standing by ready to punch you in the face. And so on…

We may not have seen the next renaissance in electronic music in 2009 – but that doesn’t mean there wasn’t plenty of inspiring, creative and amazing releases to listen to. And who knows – we might just be on the cusp on the next clubbing wave. So without further ado, take a look at the albums and compilations that have been handpicked by the team at ITM as the year’s very best…

As a fan of The Bloody Beetroots, Romborama was one of the biggest let downs of the year.

I think roborama they were trying for a more justice-y kind of depth to their sound but I like their old stuff better.

How the Beetroots ended up in the Top 20 is beyond me... as a "standout" album surely The Xx's 2.0 should get a mention.

Needs more Mr Sam - Opus Tertio & Guiseppe Ottiavni - Go as well... The problem isn't lack of decent trance, the problem is people looking in the wrong places...
