Police fiasco dampens Summanights NYE in Sydney

NYE 09/10 certainly wasn’t without its dramas across the country, with punters at Pyramid Rock in Victoria denied the chance to see headliners Empire of the Sun and Grinspoon after torrential rain brought the event to its knees shortly before midnight. Reports have also emerged on those flocking to Summanights in Sydney, who suffered their share of NYE woes. Imagine rocking up the party shortly before the midnight countdown, and being told you couldn’t enter because of “overcrowding”?

This is exactly what happened at Summanights at Home Nightclub on Thursday, resulting in more than a few sad faces, however Future Entertainment promoter Scott Robinson has responded to the inevitable fury with an explanation on the ITM forums of exactly what went down. The promoters have pointed to the heavy police presence seen throughout the whole of the Sydney CBD as the reason for the lockout.

“In response to unfortunate events that occurred at Summanights, Future Entertainment and Home The Venue would like to apologise for ticket holding patrons being shut out of the nightclub on NYE. This was an extremely frustrating position for us given the amount of work we have put in to deliver a world class NYE event, and of course for anyone who was forced to wait patiently in vain outside hoping the situation could be resolved.”

Future Entertainment have strongly denied police claims that the venue was packed beyond capacity. “At around 11.30 the Police conducted a walkthrough and even though the venue had clearly not reached its licensed capacity (which anyone who was inside the venue could see), the Police decided there were enough people inside, and instructed the venue to stop letting anymore people in. Home who looked after the venue operational side of the event strongly disagreed with this decision but no amount of reasoning could convince the Police to reverse their decision,” he said.

“No further patrons were allowed into the venue for the rest of the night regardless of how many people left the venue later in the evening. We do not support the decision made by the Police on the night to close the door or the lock out imposed on the event and hope that these types of over zealous activities don’t become more frequent moving forward.”

If you were one of the unfortunate ticket holders who were locked out by the Police and denied the chance to party with Eddie Halliwell, Sharam, Josh Wink and more, you can contact your point of purchase for ticket refunds. For more information, contact Home Nightclub on (02) 92660600 from Tuesday.

I was one of those unfortunate punters and as well as being very disappointed I cannot believe how ridiculously over policed the event was. They may as well have moved the whole station to the doorstep! A complete waste of tax payers money on many levels

Why get there earlier? They had tickets and the venue wasn't at capacity. I'm sure that could be proved by the number of tickets. That really sucks. And not letting people in as people left is ridiculous. !!!

djschulty, getting there early had nothing to do with it. People started getting turned back at 11pm. That's early. By 2am the crowd had thinned out and people wee still not being let in when there was plenty of room inside! You obviously haven't bothered

Coming into clubs and annoying us patrons is the easy work for cops, they don't want to go out there and chase down the agressive pissheads so come to the clubs where everyone is 'happy' and having a good time and piss on peoples' fun. Cops whinge they ar

Wow - why do Police have power to close down venues on a whim?? It's not their job to decide what the capacity is - it's only their job to enforce the law - and the capacity for which the venue is licensed...

Myself and three friends spend around $1700 each travelling from NZ for this party to see Josh Wink, only to stand in line outside the venue for almost 2 hours and eventually be told by police to go home "you will not get in tonight". We were gutted to sa

Here I am walking up the stairs inside the nightclub while enjoying the music and as I look up there's an entire army of cops walking down. The question I was asking myself was is this really necessary? Ok have two walk through if they really must but it
