NYE 09/10 certainly wasn’t without its dramas across the country, with punters at Pyramid Rock in Victoria denied the chance to see headliners Empire of the Sun and Grinspoon after torrential rain brought the event to its knees shortly before midnight. Reports have also emerged on those flocking to Summanights in Sydney, who suffered their share of NYE woes. Imagine rocking up the party shortly before the midnight countdown, and being told you couldn’t enter because of “overcrowding”?
This is exactly what happened at Summanights at Home Nightclub on Thursday, resulting in more than a few sad faces, however Future Entertainment promoter Scott Robinson has responded to the inevitable fury with an explanation on the ITM forums of exactly what went down. The promoters have pointed to the heavy police presence seen throughout the whole of the Sydney CBD as the reason for the lockout.
“In response to unfortunate events that occurred at Summanights, Future Entertainment and Home The Venue would like to apologise for ticket holding patrons being shut out of the nightclub on NYE. This was an extremely frustrating position for us given the amount of work we have put in to deliver a world class NYE event, and of course for anyone who was forced to wait patiently in vain outside hoping the situation could be resolved.”
Future Entertainment have strongly denied police claims that the venue was packed beyond capacity. “At around 11.30 the Police conducted a walkthrough and even though the venue had clearly not reached its licensed capacity (which anyone who was inside the venue could see), the Police decided there were enough people inside, and instructed the venue to stop letting anymore people in. Home who looked after the venue operational side of the event strongly disagreed with this decision but no amount of reasoning could convince the Police to reverse their decision,” he said.
“No further patrons were allowed into the venue for the rest of the night regardless of how many people left the venue later in the evening. We do not support the decision made by the Police on the night to close the door or the lock out imposed on the event and hope that these types of over zealous activities don’t become more frequent moving forward.”
