Jazz techno godfather Theo Parrish returns to Perth for one of his famous extended sets at Shape this Saturday night, January 16. The seasoned DJ and producer grew up in the Chicago to the sounds of Miles Davis, Nina Simone, George Gershwin and even his own uncle, jazz musician Dexter Sims, experimenting with recording from the tender age of 13 .
Parrish then went on to study the fine art of ‘Sound Sculpture’ (a form of orchestration using live instruments, looped recordings and a variety of sounds, like the human voice) at the Kansas City Art Institute and then moved to the Mecca of dance music Detroit in 1994 where he quickly became a prominent figure of the underground dance music scene. He has since garnered a massive amount of respect from both the biz, and the dancefloor itself.
An artist first and a DJ/producer second, Theo Parrish works the decks like the sound sculptor he is, shaping his music with love and passion. It’s this educated background that he brings to the decks, and combined with his wide-reaching taste in music, it’s what makes his dynamic performances so worth tuning into.
Brought over for the Days Like This Festival in Sydney, Parrish ventures west to treat fans to a trademark fusion of techno, house, jazz and electronica and brings with him a sense of credibility that is few and far between these days. Opinionated and gifted, passionate and thoughtful, this will be the first gig at Shape since it’s renovations and what more appropriate artist is there to open it.
