Since the Gallery of Modern Art opened its swish glass doors in December, 2006, it has really established itself as a ground breaking institution in Queensland’s artistic scene. Culturally, GOMA has made its mark as progressive in their approach and methods, introducing Up Late on Friday evenings to encourage visitors to experience live music alongside Goma’s ever changing art exhibits. With the Up Late programme featuring such renowned names as Wolfmother, Operator Please, Yves Klein Blue, Resin Dogs and Urthboy, this programme has cemented itself in Brisbane’s music scene as a unique pre-weekend experience.
The 6th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art Series – or APT6 – is GOMA’s freshest exhibition that includes works from more than 100 artists from 25 different countries across Asia, the Pacific and Australia. One aspect of APT6 that may be of interest to music enthusiasts is The Pacific Reggae Project. This programme particularly focuses on the emerging culture and development of Reggae music and performance – including offshoots genres such as dancehall, dub and drum n bass – across Hawaii, the Solomon Islands, New Caledonia, Vanuatu and New Zealand, to surface as the Pacific regions’ most dominating genre.
Apt6 Up Late commences this Friday with New Zealand luminary Ladyhawke presenting her unique DJ set, supported by sets from Washington and DJ El Norto (from Gentle Ben).
The upcoming programme will see a range of distinguished artists – both international and local – performing at GOMA from approximately 7.30pm each Friday night – with a special surprise guest still to be announced to complete the 6 part series on March 26. So stay tuned to inthemix for more details!
