Despite what the weather forecasts warned, Sydney turned on a spectacular day for part three of Future Music Festival 2010. Randwick Racecourse – where the festival was born back in 2006 – began heaving early on, with streams of punters soaking up the sunshine and navigating the enormous site.
Trace diehards didn’t have to travel far from the entrance to set up camp at the Above & Beyond arena, but the bulk of the action went on at the far side of the racecourse. The tone was set on the mainstage with a crowd-pleasing set from Erick Morillo, while over at the Likes Of You tent John Digweed indulged his ‘big room’ side.
Many were content to linger at Likes Of You throughout the day, soaking up the heavyweight succession of Dubfire, Digweed and inimitable entertainer Sven Vath. Decked out in sparkly pants, Vath was clearly having a ball, mugging at the front row and waving his vinyl high. Once again, there were plenty of highlights on the smaller stages too, including Way Out West’s fan-pleasing live set (which had Jody Wisternoff grinning contentedly throughout) and a buzzing Pink Flamingo closer from Boys Noize.
Just as they did in Brisbane and Perth, The Prodigy brought it home with all guns blazing, while across the field Booka Shade drew an ecstatic response with the Movements classics and a few new ones.
