If accounts from their Perth show were anything to go by, then there was little doubt in our minds that last night’s Massive Attack show in Sydney was going to be something special. While any show set under the stars at the Sydney Opera House forecourt is bound to make one swoon, Massive Attack’s repertoire of hits and custom-made visuals provided those lucky enough to snap up a ticket to the sell out show with an unforgettable experience.
“It’s not often we get a better view than you do,” declared Robert ‘3D’ del Naja early on in the evening; an arguable perspective for anyone in the audience. From the moment the stage first filled with smoke, the perfectly synchronised light and visual show never ceased to impress.
While vivid lights and political messages occupied the back and foreground of the stage, guests Horace Andy, Martina Topley-Bird and Deborah Miller worked together with 3D and Daddy G to seamlessly weave a blend of both classic and new Massive Attack hits.
With the crowd perhaps comatosed by their surroundings, it wasn’t until later in the show that the rather sensible crowd was unable to resist throwing their fists in the air for Horace Andy’s performance of Angel, finally giving Massive Attack back some of the energy they were giving out.
Missed out? Check out the first photos from the evening here or pick up a ticket to the second show tonight – yes, there are still some left.
