With their newly released third album Immersion marking a return to form for Perth bass stalwarts Pendulum after what the group themselves saw as a ‘sophomore slump’ with 2008’s In Silico, old school fans are once again embracing Pendulum for getting back to their electronic roots. With In Silico now well and truly behind them, Pendulum got on the phone to talk to inthemix this week and came clean about their feelings for that record, namely that they ‘hate’ it now.
“There’s no question that we’re proud of In Silico, it was good for us, it actually went platinum last week which is pretty crazy. But I just think that it leaves this bad taste in your mouth,” Pendulum mainstay Gareth McGrillen told inthemix. “We went through such hell trying to make it and I think we feel like we kind of hate it now. But it did the job.”
Being the first to admit that In Silico suffered from a heavy dose of the dreaded “second album syndrome”, McGrillen says that, in hindsight, the sophomore slump was largely “self-inflicted”.
“I think we did it ourselves, you know? I think it was just an identity crisis for us,” he told ITM. “That’s what was different with Immersion, we weren’t afraid of what was on the other side, we just had the confidence to do what we wanted to do, and I think that was in part because In Silico brought our fan base to a whole new level.”
