Speaking on the phone to inthemix this morning, the Soulwax lads confirmed that they were indeed in the studio working on some new songs. But the material they’re prepping isn’t for a new album, with David Dewaele explaining that the songs are just for us ahead of the band’s Parklife dates.

“These tracks aren’t for a new record, we’re not doing anything like that at the moment, we’re just working on what we’re going to be doing at Parklife,” he explained as the clock hit midnight over in Belgium. “It’s about finding something that makes the live show even more interesting and a bit more explosive.”

Whilst it might sound a bit strange to hear that Soulwax aren’t writing songs for a new record – especially considering that Nite Versions came out in 2005 – Dewaele explained that Soulwax’s affection for Australian crowds was a motivating factor in their bid to step up their Parklife sets.

“It might sound like a cliché, but there’s just something about Australian audiences that’s more ecstatic than people in Austria or the Dutch,” he laughed. “I think they’re just more open-minded to new things and to us. I don’t want to over-analyse it because it’s something that we don’t question, really. You go to Australia, the crowds go nuts, you get booked again and you just say, ‘okay, great, let’s go’. That’s how it works and it’s so good.”

Dropping some hints about what Australian audiences can expect when the band suit up for the Parklife dates, Dewaele said that Soulwax will definitely be in party mode, busting out a setup in the vein of their Nite Versions mould.

“It wouldn’t really make sense for us to come onstage with a grand piano and play a few ballads…we’re there to make people dance,” he said. “The track we’re working on right now doesn’t have a name, but we’re going to be playing it first in our sets and you’ll know it’s new when you hear it. It’s killer, it’s really great. I’m super proud of it.”

Parklife 2010 dates:

Gold Coast – Saturday 25 September
Perth – Sunday 26 September
Melbourne – Saturday 2 October
Sydney – Sunday 3 October
Adelaide – Monday 4 October
