While Parklife in 2010 is a multi-city tour with a huge cast of international guests, but back in the early days it was a far humbler affair. The set-up then involved a single headliner alongside a handful of locals, a tent in the idyllic surrounds of Sydney’s Centennial Park and a few thousand eager house heads.
After successful editions with Bob Sinclar and Mark Farina, the festival secured patented superstar Erick Morillo for a four hour set in 2003. As Fuzzy co-founder Ming Gan rightly remarked in our Story Of Parklife feature, “House music was huge then”. So, too, was Morillo’s reputation. In the full swing of the man’s session under the Parklife marquee, the jubilant mood changed when a water bottle was lobbed in his direction. He responded as any private-jet-flying DJ should: by getting on the mic and having a rant.
Despite that little upset, this was the cementing of a winning formula for Parklife. Outdoor festivals – particularly in government venues – were a rarity, and Fuzzy continued to capitalise on our love for partying in the open air. The next year, Parklife moved to Kippax Lake with two stages boasting the likes of Mr Scruff, Felix da Housecat, Shapeshifters, Freddy Fresh and last-minute addition Mylo (“he didn’t know how to DJ,” notes Ming). From there, it was onwards and upwards.
After taking a trip back to QBH in Melbourne for Sasha and Digweed’s crowning set in 2006, we thought Parklife 2003 was ripe for a Friday Flashback. Bring on the cargo shorts!
