In honour of Sasha’s impending return to these parts for Good Vibrations 2011, this week’s Friday Flashback revisits one of the UK don’s finest moments here.
The Sydney stop on Sasha’s 2005 tour for the Renaissance Summer Ball had all the makings of a stellar night. Home Nightclub was rammed and the headliner had two exciting talents warming the main-room for him: protégé James Zabiela and first-time Australian visitor Nic Fanciulli.
After Fanciulli played a perfectly-pitched warm-up set and Zabiela raised the pulse with his technical wizardy, the room was well and truly primed for the main man at 3am. Sasha commanded a heaving dancefloor with the darker end of his repetorie, while the two young guns went back-to-back on the Home Terrace. This set would be the makings of the pair’s One + One project, and the vibe in that close-quarters room was something special.
All three DJs (or ‘the prog trinity’, as our reviewer coined it) then took over the main room from 6am with driving techno, and it was still shoulder-to-shoulder on the dancefloor. The buzz afterwards was unequivocal: this is how large-scale club events should be done. It was also the night that spawned a photo beloved of the inthemix forums. Says it all, really.
