For a good decade now, the Plump DJs have been a fixture of Australian summers. This season is set to be no different, with Lee Rous and Andy Gardner doing the festival circuit in December and January.
A Plump DJs set in the open-air is always a sure-fire banger, and this time the guys are buzzing about their new synergy in the booth. Speaking to inthemix for his Miami hotel room in the midst of a North American jaunt, Rous enthused about how the Plumps have stepped it up a notch. It’s all down to a piece of technology previously mastered by James Zabiela and Nic Fanciulli in their one + one sets.
“At the moment we’re using four CDJs and one mixer, so we’re both using the same mixer at the same time,” he explained. “We’re both using this box called a Q2 Splitter Box. We can basically mix at the same time with up to four records and get really creative behind the decks.”
As for what they’re packing in the crate, it won’t be strictly breakbeat, but Rous is adamant it’ll all be true Plumps. “We have really been developing this year to try and get a more succinct sound together,” he went on. “When we came out for Good Vibes earlier in the year, I think we were still trying to get our act together, but now we’re pretty much sorted with our musical direction.
“With [2008 album] Headthrash, we maybe went a little too all over the shop, but I think we’ve just come back and we’re getting a good sound together at the moment.”
