It wouldn’t be Australia day without a scorching Big Day Out, some cricket on the tele and the triple j’s annual Hottest 100 countdown. Counting down the best songs of 2010 as voted by listeners and band-wagoneers alike, the poll went down yesterday, and once again the presence of dance music was felt strongly.

Besides local alternative staples Angus & Julia Stone taking out the top spot with their hit Big Jet Plane, dance groups abounded throughout the countdown with the top 20 seeing entries from the likes of Flight Facilities, Duck Sauce, Adrian Lux and Mark Ronson, while ol’ ITM foil Kanye West even cracked in with his tune Runaway.

Backing up after their high placing in the previous year’s poll, local electro kids Art vs. Science took the #8 spot with their tune Magic Fountain, the band’s second entry following Finally See Our Way landing at #90. The highest ranking for a dance act of the countdown however went to British dudes Ou Est Le Swimming Pool and their tune Dance The Way I Feel, a small victory for the group in an otherwise tumultuous 12 months.

Other notable entries in the 100 included two spots for Crystal Castles, Hot Chip and Gorillaz, Pendulum topped off their #11 spot for their bootleg ABC News Theme remix with entries for Witchcraft and Watercolour at #48 and #69 respectively and Klaxons, LCD Soundsystem and Big Boi also grabbed notable spots.
