Mid-week holidays, we can all agree, are the best. With summer already off to a crowded start, Australia Day brought with it another round of club shows and festivals for the dance music reveller. As ever, inthemix’s star shooters were out amongst the action on Tuesday night and the public holiday to capture all the patriotic partying.

Leading the way in scale on Australia Day was the undisputed champion of the summer circuit Big Day Out. With typically scorching conditions in Sydney, the festival swung into life early with Lupe Fiasco giving it his all on the mainstage. In the Boiler Room, Die Antwoord got unhinged, The Bloody Beetroots helped shed some sweat and LCD Soundsystem powered through its enviable arsenal of hits. In true Big Day Out form, it was a long, hot marathon of music – the photos say it all!

Meanwhile in Adelaide, local party people Groove hosted Laidback Luke, DJ Marky and Andy C inside the walls of The Old Adelaide Gaol. The ‘Executioner’ himself got things rolling early, paving the way for Luke to bring it home with big-room Dutch house. More events should be in venues like this!

From Adelaide, Andy C hopped on a plane to Australia’s drum & bass capital, Perth for Heavyweight Soundz. He was greeted at Metro City by a huge crowd of mad fans (he is one of the ‘Greatest DJs Of All Time’ after all!), who then copped a storming set from the master. “Perth, your vibe always amazes me,” wrote the DJ on his Facebook page. Looking at these photos, you can see what he means.

Australia Day also saw two of January’s biggest club tours on the move. House heavyweight Roger Sanchez threw a beach party in Adelaide, while his compatriot Kaskade was an honorary Aussie for the day in Melbourne.

They may not have had star internationals, but the Island Of Sin boat-and-beach party on the Gold Coast certainly had sun, frosty drinks and lots and lots of bikinis. We’re not surprised to see so many hands in the air.
