While we try reserve all the WTF news for Friday afternoons when the weekend spirit and possibly a few drinks are kicking in, we had to bust out this breaking news report right now as today has seen the announcement of the nominations for the 2011 APRA Awards, with some particularly odd nods in the dance field.
Not to be confused with its acronym namesake the Australian Professional Rodeo Association, the Australasian Performing Right Association is once again honouring the peak performers of the local music industry, a list naturally dominated by rock big shots like Birds Of Tokyo, Powderfinger and Jet.
But the nominations start to get a little wonky when you scroll down to the ‘dance’ field of the awards with former Westlife boy band-er and Irish import Brian McFadden sticking out like a hideously sore thumb among local guns like Miami Horror, Art vs Science and The Potbelleez.
Sadly McFadden’s nomination didn’t come for his pseudo-date-rape banjo-rave anthem Just The Way You Are (Drunk At The Bar) but for the auto-tune coated Chemical Rush. Seriously, BriFad makes fellow dance category nominee Zoe Badwi look like a Bjork-level genius with this turd.
Should the Australian dance community rise up at this slight against its good name? Or is this just another example of the mainstream getting it painfully wrong?
