Now that dubstep has taken its rightful place in the pages of the Chambers Dictionary, it’s almost time for the Parklife bass contingent to roll into town. Leading the pack is the holy trinity of Skream, Benga and Artwork as Magnetic Man. While two-thirds of the trio has visited in DJ mode before – and will again for Summadayze this New Year’s Eve – Parklife will be our first audience with the celebrated live show. So, what can we expect?

The Northern summer was a triumphant one for Magnetic Man, making its first-ever appearance in North America for Coachella, followed by a checklist of leading European festivals from EXIT to Roskilde to South West Four. When building the live show, the three producers were inspired by the highly-orchestrated productions of acts like The Chemical Brothers. It’s a work in progress, too, as they told I Like Music in late August. “We’ve just spent the last three months building the new rig that we’re using now and it is unreal,” enthused Artwork. “You can do anything you want. It’s limitless.”

The live show finds them commanding three laptops – one with drums, one with top-lines and one with bass, plus a fourth ‘master computer’ – “so we can swap ‘em around and make it up as we go along”. The rig is also equipped with integrated visuals that can be triggered for each musical section, including a virtual John Legend for Getting Nowhere. “We had a guy sitting in a room for nearly two weeks tracing John Legend’s head with a pen on a screen for that,” Artwork told I Like Music.

For fans, hearing all those big moments from Magnetic Man’s self-titled album is going to be a real treat, and of course it’s likely fellow Parklife recruit Katy B will be on-hand for the likes of Perfect Stranger. Check out the trio in action below, and brace for some bass…
