While St.Jerome’s Laneway Festival is the summer date beloved of ‘indie’ types, experience has taught us to expect at least a few standout electronic acts. Past names that have fit that bill include Rusko, Four Tet, The Presets, Radioclit and Daedelus, and while 2011 was a little light on that side of things, we expect plenty of goodness this summer.
The people at Laneway today announced the dates and venues for 2012 (scroll right down) so you can get prepared nice and early, with the line-up expected on 10 October. To no one’s great surprise, plenty of rumours and hints have already begun to fly to about who’ll be making the journey down here. In the spirit of things, these are a few we’re getting behind.
James Blake
Yes, he was pretty much just here for Splendour In The Grass, but James Blake’s live show made quite an impression (notably with sceptics who don’t dig his debut album). While he was given a mid-afternoon slot in the dance tent at Splendour, we can see a more prestigious position transpiring on the Laneway bill. After all, the Laneway folks picked him to play on their stage at London’s Field Day festival and they’ve been known to hit Facebook with swoons about his Bon Iver collaboration. Very curious.
Mount Kimbie
Mount Kimbie is another act that appeared on Laneway’s Field Day stage in London, which basically tells you nothing…but certainly piques our interest. The duo’s first-ever visit earlier this year was much talked-about (and much sold-out) so this one makes sense. Or at least we hope it does.
Hudson Mohawke
In this ridiculous internet age, everything’s a clue, and Laneway including Scottish bass-bender Hudson Mohawke in its radio show is evidence enough for us. After all, a broken foot forced him to cancel his tour last summer, so the moment is overdue.
M83
That prodigious Frenchman M83 is Laneway’s kind of guy. He’s also releasing a mammoth double-album Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming in October, and in the early words of Time Out it’s a “high impact, dizzying synth-pop epic”. Sounds pretty great to us.
Junior Boys
“There are lots of fine Canadian folk on this year’s bill,” Laneway hinted this week. Well, Junior Boys are two of the finest Canadian folk around and we’re still waiting to hear the songs from It’s All True live. They were damn good that time at Parklife, don’t you agree?
