This year’s event will be the last time the Big Day Out takes place in New Zealand. Promoter Ken West tweeted from the event’s official feed this afternoon: “This year will be New Zealand’s last Big Day Out. Come party with us this Friday. It’s been an amazing 18 years here in Auckland.”

West had previously spoken candidly with the NZ Herald about the problems the festival has faced this year, including the challenges of meeting lofty audience expectations, the bidding wars pushing up festival costs, the departure of the festival’s co-founder Viv Lees, and the plans for the future of the festival.

The Big Day Out tour kicks off in Australia this weekend, with a Boiler Room line-up led by the full Nero live show, Battles, Girl Talk, Royksopp and Bassnectar.
