In late March 2012, Marquee nightclub at Sydney’s The Star will open its doors for business. So what do we know so far about the multi-million-dollar development? As previously reported on inthemix, US nightclub operator Tao Group is behind the ambitious venture, following the success of Marquee in New York and more recently at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. We also learned earlier this month that Marquee – The Star (as it’s set to be called) will have a capacity of 1,200 people across three rooms, with almost 20,000 square feet of floor space.

With opening night just over a month away, we’ve found out from the Tao Group what else to expect from the newly-minted superclub. The Marquee main room is set to feature a ‘30-foot projection stage’ with an LED DJ booth and two dancefloors. Away from the main action is a ‘stylish library style room offering an intimate lounge experience’ (and a working fireplace, naturally), a smaller room The Boom Box with its own sound system and outdoor patio and finally ‘a chill-out area with unparalleled views of the Sydney skyline and a unisex bathroom lounge’.

As for the DJs who’ll be filling the club week in, week out, at this point we can only look to the 2012 Vegas residents for clues. Those exclusive bookings include Kaskade, Armin van Buuren, Cosmic Gate and Ferry Corsten, so Sydney could be looking at some big visitors this year. Marquee – The Star is also looking for staff, with over 120 jobs available from bartenders to venue hosts to bathroom attendants, so head here if you’re interested.

We spoke to Bob Shindelar, Director of Nightclub Marketing for Marquee – The Star about what to expect.

Can you tell us about the fit-out/production that we can expect from The Main Room at Marquee?
The fit-out is truly state-of-the-art and around every corner we made sure to have a series of ‘wow’ factors that will keep people talking. The main room is voyeuristic by design with great sightlines and an emphasis on production capabilities like the 30-foot, high-resolution LED wall and DJ booth. Aside from the music and lighting we are hoping to create a unique atmosphere through strategically situated live art and performance vignettes through out the entire venue, not just the main room.

What do you hope Marquee will bring to Sydney’s nightlife? What’s set to be unique about the experience?
We are relatively new to Sydney and have not experienced enough of the nightlife scene to know if our new venture at The Star will change things, but we do plan to focus on the core values our company has seen a lot of success with in other markets and expect it will translate well with the help of our Sydney-based partners and team.

These values are an acute focus on the guest experience, relevant and impactful programming and customer service. We have always focused on building great products and providing value for our guests and hope that when we do the same in Sydney the market will receive us with open arms and make The Star a one-stop nightlife experience.

Is Marquee Sydney expected to share some of the DJs from the Vegas and NYC clubs?
Tao Group has a vast and expanding network of nightclubs in Las Vegas and New York with countless strategic alliances in other markets both in the US and around the world. Through that we have developed strong relationships with some of the top artists in the music community. We plan on leveraging those relationships and tapping into that network to bring some of the biggest DJs and live acts from all genres to this amazing city…It’s an exciting time.
