If you missed the last LiquidBASS party at the Jubilee Hotel then you missed a fine moment in Brisbane techno. Brisbane’s King of tech – Kazu Kimura, Melbourne’s delectable Disco Pussy, a selection of Brisbane’s finest decknicians and a large body of mad keen punters combined for a party that many rated as one of the best of the year.
With the next installment of LiquidBASS set to rock the Jubilee on Saturday 14 September, I caught up with a few of the people tasked to make the next LiquidBASS another success – local USS/Phreakin lad Dave Ince (aka DJ Orinoko) and the two guest DJs from the Melbourne techno clubbing institution Teriyaki Anarki Saki -Dee Dee and Slack.
With the last party proving to be a bit of a surprise stormer, I ask Orinoko if it was what he expected. He explained, “As far as the vibe of the night went I certainly wouldn’t have been willing to bet on it being as good as it was. I think it’s got something to do with all the moons from all our alternate realities colliding”. Whatever it was, it all came together and the Jubilee was the venue of choice that night for many a Brisbane clubber.
As with any great party, the success of the last one creates greater expectations about the next. However as far as betting on the success of this one is concerned the USS guys aren’t taking any chances. Harking back to parties-past at Brisbane underground clubbing institution Mantra, Dee Dee and Slack will again grace the decks. As Slack comments, “My only experience (DJing in Brisbane) was as a guest player for Liquid at Mantra and I liked it a lot”.
Whilst that was now quite some time ago, his enthusiasm for another Brisbane set is obvious. “The hard work by people like Kazu and Steve Coughlan (Orinoko’s production partner, Shadrach) has resounded in Melbourne, and thankfully with a bit of risk and leadership there’s a funky brand of Brisbane techno that has begun to define itself independently.”
It’s a funk that the Melbourne lads plan to add their special touch to. For Dee Dee, it’s a matter of punters expecting “Sore legs and ears! If you want it hard, or funky and loose then that’s what you’ll get. Having played for over 10 years, I have a broad range of music but my pet is techno. Hard yet funky, banging but bouncing.” His comments are mirrored by Slack, who elaborated, “Dee Dee and I have a trademark approach that is fairly fierce, but also funky”. It’s a combination that is likely to go down a treat with the Brisbane crowd.
As for Orinoko’s grand plans for the night itself, “Downstairs will probably be a little bit chunkier, although still a bit less frantic than upstairs once we get going. Just a similar vibe, a few different locals coming in to play, all of whom are skilled individuals. The light rigs will have a few improvements as well, with a couple of surprises in store.”
Looking to the future beyond the coming LiquidBASS, things are on the up and up as Orinoko exlains. “We’ve got some plans underway that involve some major international techno talent, a couple of interstate acts that haven’t made their way up to Brisbane yet and a couple of others who are old favourites.” With words like that, its clear that LiquidBASS is emerging as one of Brisbane’s premier ongoing club nights and the coming installment is one not to me missed
