THE STAGES
The Movement Festival and its four areas will present talent loved by fans of all forms of electronic music. One of the main objectives of this year’s efforts is to put the annual free music festival back into the hands of the local artists. We are strengthening the stage concepts and presentation to broaden the talent represented and to return the focus of the event to Detroit.
THREE DAYS, FOUR STAGES, NOON TO MIDNIGHT ON EVERY STAGE, EVERY DAY
MOVEMENT STAGE
To create an intimate environment this year, the “Movement Stage,” performance platform, usually atop the Hart Plaza Amphitheater, will be dropped down to the lip of the bowl. It will feature some of Detroit’s most influential talents, as well as some newcomers and international guest artists.
HIGH TECH SOUL STAGE
The “High Tech Soul” stage will be a proper representation of its title, soulful sounds pushed to its creative limits. This stage’s eclectic lineup will offer hip-hop, jazz, neosoul, house and techno in an open-air environment. This genre will be expanded from years past, and expose some of Detroit’s best kept secrets.
THE MUSIC INSTITUTE STAGE
Another new area will be the “Music Institute” stage – an enclosed DJ – oriented platform. Paying homage to the legendary Detroit club at 1315 Broadway, that featured artists like D-Wynn, Juan Atkins and Derrick May from 1988-89; a venue which helped launch the Detroit sound and artists such as Richie Hawtin, Carl Craig and more. This area will showcase the fruit of such early efforts, focusing on Detroit house artists and one of Detroit’s newest secret sounds, “Beatdown.”
THE UNDERGROUND STAGE
Similar to past festivals, the “Underground” stage will feature more experimental, cerebral electronic music. In addition, Movement 2003 will offer New York’s underground electro pioneers new to this stage – well known for bringing the underground explosion, from clubs such as the Paradise Garage and The Loft to a daytime festival
So here it is, a call to the underground: You wanted an independent festival, free from corporate control or outside manipulation. You’ve got it. So support it. Book your flights, fill up your tanks and head to Detroit for Memorial Day weekend. There’s a party going on in Hart Plaza, and it’s the largest free electronic music festival in the world. Spread the word. - Scott Sterling, Managing Editor-Urb Magazine
