Gauche Chic promoter Niyi is hosting the record launch of Crazy Girl’s new single ‘Get Picked Up’ at London’s Too 2 Much this week, spinning alongside Paris the Black Fu from Detroit Grand Pubahs.
The ultra-flamboyant 21 year old Londoner is one of the highest profile scenesters to emerge from London’s post-electroclash, alternative club scene though told Skrufff this week’s he’s firmly focused on his own future rather than ideas from the past.
“I think all of these new club kids who have plundered the 80s for ideas and have just come up with the obvious bits are just plain boring and lazy,” Niyi declared, “We can’t even remember the 80s; we were five.”
The now ex-St Martins College student dropped out to concentrate on his music career this year and stressed he’s far more interested in substance than style.
“Visuals are always important, but I think the gesture of not cutting your hair is more important than the actual resulting hairstyle,” said Niyi.
“I thought I could change the world by doing art, but the truth is, its influence is terribly limited. Music on the other hand is another story. At the top of their fame, the Spice Girls could have run for parliament and won. If my mum saw Tracy Emin on the ballot paper she’d be like ‘Tracey who?’.”
As well as promoting Gauche Chic and DJing and performing throughout most of London’s alternative clubs, Niyi’s also recently taken up production, under the banner ‘Niyi Can’t Mix’; not that he’s letting on.
“I think a DJ set is like the girl opposite on the tube. She’s either a looker or she isn’t. You either want to take her home and press play or you don’t. Neatness doesn’t really come into it, does it?”
