That New York trio famous for quirky lyrics and even quirkier marketing ideas (i.e. life-like figurines, packaged in a sardine can and the first ever world wide tour of concerts ‘in the round’ circa Hello Nasty) are back again with another brilliant scheme!
Adrock, Mike D and MCA started up a competition for the myspace massive a few months ago, challenging new and aspiring filmmakers to make a Beastie Boys video of some sort, with a miniscule two week deadline to work to. What they got back was 100 amazingly creative entries featuring montages and Beastie Boys legendary filmclip remakes (Sabotage, Shake Your Rump).
After lots of chin scratching from the frenetic trio and careful selection between shared head-slaps and handclaps, the winners were a partnership going by the name of ‘Brothers Rye’. Who were then promptly flown out to The Sundance Film Festival and treated like VIPs, hanging with the New York punks till the midnight screening of their winning entry.
The 1,200 guests in attendance were not only treated to four hours of fun and the exclusive unveiling of the video, which was looped on screens throughout the night, but they were also treated to a very special surprise 13 track performance from The Beastie Boys themselves. Notable guests in attendance were: Maggie Gyllenhaal, Michael Rappaport, Gina Gershon, Peter Saarsgard and Dennis Quaid.
