The Australian DJ Nick Taylor, arrested two months ago on drug possession in Bali, faced that country’s legal system this week where he confessed to being a drug user and claimed he was addicted to cocaine. Fronting up to his initial hearing, he told the Bali District court that he was carrying and using cocaine at the private villa party where he was arrested on June 10.
The Age reports that Taylor told the court he was performing the previous night at a popular club called Sixty-Six and was given the cocaine by another clubber, some of which he consumed the next morning before fronting up to the villa party. He claimed was addicted to the drug; “I lack confidence if I don’t use cocaine. I use it for my work,” he told the court.
Taylor’s girlfriend Brigitte Kaelin testified at the hearing, telling the court that he used the drug to lessen the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease and to help him deal with anxiety. She also testified that he was treated for drug addiction in Australia.
Prosecutors also outlined at the hearing three alternative drug charges against Taylor. These included the possession of narcotics, with a potential 10-year jail term; the use of narcotics, which carries a maximum of four years; and lastly, being addicted to an illegal substance but failing to report to authorities which carries a maximum six-month term or one even as short as three months.
Taylor’s lawyer Erwin Siregar said the testimony demonstrated that his client should only be charged with addiction. The trial continues next week, where the prosecutors will reveal their sentence request for the accused.
