A record number of Australian acts will be showcased to the European music scene at Berlin’s Popkomm Festival, the fastest growing tradeshow in the European music industry, with Adelaide’s Hilltop Hoods among the acts to be spotlighted. Eight local acts will appear at the festival which takes place across 30 different clubs.
“The Hilltop Hoods are now well placed to be the first Australian hip hops artists to build a major international presence,” says Matthew Proft, an export adviser who focuses on Arts, Culture and Entertainment for Austrade.
“Popkomm has a particular emphasis on acts that can push their credentials through live performance, offering a great platform for acts like the Hilltop Hoods to launch into one of the world’s most lucrative music markets.”
Laura Imbruglia and Worldfly will also be participating in dedicated showcases, while there will be a special platform celebrating women in Australian music that will be featuring Lillian Thoms, Asleep in the Park and Beki and the Bullets. On the dance music side of things, Sydney icon and Ministry of Sound spinner Mark Dynamix will be participating the DJ programme.
The European music market would be a desirable target for any Australian musician: worth approximately EUR$11 billion, it’s comparable in size to North America. Popkomm is one of the possible ways to crack this market, with more than 15,000 music professionals and 800 exhibitors from around the world meeting at the festival to network, learn, and discover new talent.
Austrade is currently seeking more Australian acts and labels to participate in the Popkomm 2007 tradeshow between 19-21 September, visit their WEBSITE for more information.
