Klaxons have pipped the likes of Amy Winehouse and Arctic Monkeys for the 2007 Mercury Music Prize at a ceremony at London’s Grosvenor House.
The band that kick-started the current nu-rave trend took the gong late on Tuesday night, with album Myths of the Near Future beating efforts from a field also boasting Jamie T, The View, Dizzee Rascal and dark horse Bat for Lashes.
Bassist James Righton explained how they’d taken inspiration from award favourites Arctic Monkeys, who were gunning for a place in history as the first band to win back to back titles. “A year ago we were in the studio making this album and we were sitting in the studio watching Arctic Monkeys win this,” he said. “We saw that and thought we have to make a new album.”
2007 was the 16th annual Mercury Music Prize and interest from viewers as well as the betting public sat higher than ever, thanks largely to Amy ‘Wino’ Winehouse’s newfound role as tabloid fodder – at least when there’s no news on Pete Doherty.
