Britain’s hugely influential radio station Radio 1 announced more changes in their late night schedules this week, concentrating their dance music shows on Friday night, leaving Saturdays to be filled with ‘black music genres’.
The new schedules means Judge Jules will be relinquishing his Saturday evening 7-9pm show for a late night Friday night slot from 1-3am, preceded by Dave Pearce (11-1am), who also loses his Sunday night early evening slot.
Pete Tong instead keeps his Friday night slot of 7-9pm, having lost an hour of his Essential Selection on the last big re-organisation last year. Chatting to Skrufff at the time, Pete insisted he’d become sanguine about the whole process, refusing to become obsessed with audience figures and ratings.
“I think it comes to a point when you have been there as long as I have that you can’t, really,” said Pete.
I’m aware of the time slot I’m on, and I’m eternally grateful, you try and do your best,” he continued, “You are constantly also dealing with fashion, which is the fashion of how hot and cold the perception of club/dance /electronic music is.”Relative newcomer Eddie Halliwell keeps the same midnight to 2am weekly slot, though switches Friday nights to Thursdays preceeding Radio 1’s newest star signing Kissy Sellout.
