Roy from former Positiva superstars the Vengaboys is becoming a star again on YouTube, after a video was uploaded featuring him demonstrating safety checks in his new career as an airline steward.
The Dutch foursome became Positiva’s most successful signings in the late 90s through club anthems including ‘Boom Boom Boom Boom’, ‘We Like to Party’ and perhaps their greatest hit ‘We’re Going to Ibiza’, crashing and burning around 2001.
The Vengaboys became one of the few European dance acts to sell more than 500,000 albums in the States, but the band were nevertheless sometimes mocked by rivals, including Chicane mainmain Nick Bracegirdle, who in 2001 said in interview he ‘liked pop music but drew the line at the Vengaboys’.
“I have a real problem with musical snobbery and have fought against it quite a lot,” Nick told Jonty Skrufff. “But there are many bad pop records and I’m afraid that the Vengaboys are responsible for some of them,” he claimed.
Positiva founder Nick Halkes (who later left the EMI imprint to set up Incentive) spoke proudly of the band in an exchange on Industry portal recordoftheday.co.uk in 2004, when a phantom poster attributed their success to subsequent Positiva chief Kevin Robinson.
“As Kevin will testify, signing the Vengaboys whilst I was running Positiva took much hard work and dedication on both our parts so I think that one qualifies as a shared success,” said Nick, “Finally, if anyone has an act that they think can truly deliver in Vengaboys style I’d love to hear it here… we only go for acts and records that we really believe in,” he added.
