Minus boss Richie Hawtin is a self-professed “futurist”, and it seems he’s got a few things to say about where electronic music is headed.
Speaking to Mixmag for their November ‘Future Issue’, the man with the golden fringe claims to have the gadget that will change the craft of DJing. No, it’s not the Maven controller (Sasha’s toy of choice), but an innocuous black wand called the Pacemaker.
The hand-held device, designed by Swedish company Tonium, is the digital equivalent of a pair of turntables and a motherload of records. In other words, it’s the only thing you need to play a technically brilliant, face-melting set of minimal techno. If you were Richie Hawtin, that is. It came to the great man’s attention whilst in Barcelona for Sonar. “I saw a huge crowd gathered around a girl DJing with this small device,” he told Mixmag. “It was a huge moment.”
Geek out over this video of Hawtin giving the Pacemaker a test spin.
