It’s one of dance music’s great opinion-dividers – just how grating is Pete Tong’s voice?
Dedicated listeners of the man’s Essential Mix program on BBC Radio 1 have plenty of chances to ponder that question, as barely ten minutes go by without the host chiming in over the breakdown you were trying to enjoy.
But really, who gives a shit? Well, obviously the minds behind tongless.com, a new website ‘dedicated’ to bringing you the best Essential Mixes, sans Tongy’s commentary. The intro on the web-page puts it like this:
“Just imagine you are walking through the Louvre and you want to watch the countless artworks which grace the walls. And then imagine that the museum director has put some his little signs with text about the painting (and some text which is completely off-topic) on top of it, covering part of the precious paintings. This is exactly what Pete Tong has been doing for so long with his Essential Mix!”
You can’t fault dedication like that, but why, then, is there only one Tong-free Essential Mix (Trentemoller from 2006) available for download? Here’s hoping tongless.com isn’t all talk too…
