As already revealed on ITM, bouncers at Liverpool superclub Nation stormed on stage during Soulwax’s gig at Chibuku recently, with the band’s drummer being punched in the resulting fight. Footage of the ugly incident was posted on YouTube the following day, which was followed by statements from both Soulwax and Chibuku downplaying the incident.
Posting on Chibuku’s forum, club promoter Rich suggested Soulwax’s incendiary performance had prompted unexpected ‘hysteria and chaos’ amongst the crowd, and said the lack of a pit or barrier between the audience and stage combined with insufficient planning, all of which led to the fight.
“Both Chibuku and Nation are in agreement that what [went] on was totally unsatisfactory and can never be given the opportunity to happen again,” he added. “We look forward to the band returning to Liverpool and maintaining the longstanding relationship with Chibuku and the city,” he said.
Soulwax were equally conciliatory. “We’ve had lots of emails from people about what happened on Friday and the band send their apologies to anyone who came to the show at Nation for the interruptions to the evening. Circumstances beyond our control meant that we couldn’t finish our live set or DJ,” they added. “And we hope to be able to make it up to you soon.”
