The not particularly dance music-savvy Billboard.com has named Dutch trance mega-star Tiesto the highlight of 2007, along with “the return of house music.”
With no mention of the Daft Punk pyramid spectacular, Billboard instead singled out Tiesto’s Elements Of Life world tour.
“Tiesto’s spectacular tour featured sky-high video screens, pyrotechnics and trippy appearances by Blue Man Group,” enthused the US media outlet. “With a lighter-hoisting rock scope and a ‘concert-style’ set programmed to match the visual onslaught, the tour blazed a new trail for DJ performance.”
Their assertion is backed up by Robbins Entertainment VP John Parker. “Tiesto had the most heat [in 2007]. The big story was his tour and all the people talking about it for weeks after he left their city.”
The other highpoint of 2007, according to Billboard, was house music’s triumphant return.
“House tracks laced with vocals are making a smashing comeback, getting airplay and creating quite a buzz,” says Jessica Risling-Sholl, director of marketing at American house imprint Ultra Records. Well, to be fair, she wouldn’t say otherwise, would she?
The names Billboard trots out as spearheading this “smashing comeback” include the not-exactly-green Bob Sinclar, Kaskade and Roger Sanchez.
The final excitable word, though, is reserved for DJ-slash-hair model David Guetta.
“Guetta’s recent stop at tiny New York club Cielo was a shocking spectacle: The well-heeled crowd – out on Thanksgiving night, no less – pawed at the lanky DJ like he was Elvis reincarnated, climbing banquettes to snap his photo, gazing at him with the kind of devotion usually reserved for teen idols.”
Ah, bless.
Watch Tiesto get those hands in the air at Sensation White 2006.
And check out those crazy American kids getting loose and teen-like at Cielo in New York, as David Guetta and Chris Willis do Love Don’t Let Me Go.
