For electronic enthusiasts, the UK is something of a dance music Mecca. Matthew Roberts, one half of English house duo King Unique, isn’t so sure.
In an expansive interview with the Lithuanian website DJ Scene, Matt Thomas and Matt Roberts fired off a few interesting observations.
When asked about favourite places to play, Roberts name-checked Tokyo, Argentina, Lithuania and Budapest, before adding, “Anywhere except for the UK is good.”
“It’s just a bit miserable,” he continues. “[The] club scene is very old and people are tired. I mean, the club scene in UK was hitting a peak from 1997 to 2002, and probably most of the kids who should go clubbing now were born in 1997, so for them it’s just old. They prefer going to festivals or gigs, listening to emo and rock music. So the UK club scene is not anywhere close to what it used to be. So anywhere else is good, compared to UK.”
Wise words or a tad miserly?
Here’s a little clip of King Unique spinning for some not old or tired Eastern Europeans. And it’s not filmed on a camera phone!
