Last Thursday night, the annual Breakspoll Awards took over London’s Fabric nightclub to recognise 2007’s movers-and-shakers in breakbeat. And, of course, to make the walls vibrate with a dream line-up of live acts and DJs.
With the winners voted by fans, Breakspoll is a true indication of what’s working on dancefloors. ‘Best Album’ went to the always-inspired Ils for his Paranoid Prophets. Perennial favourites Plump DJs won ‘Best Producer’ and ‘Best Single’ ( System Addict ), while Stanton Warriors took out ‘Best DJ’. Marine Parade talent Alex Metric was (again) named Breakthrough Producer, an honour you can cross-check when the man tours Australia this month. Currently on the road to recovery after being diagnosed with leukemia, Paul Arnold deservedly took the ‘Outstanding Contribution to Breakbeat’ crown.
For those lucky enough to be in attendance, the post-ceremony party was a feast of rare live performances from the likes of Atomic Hooligan, Slyde, Kraak & Smaak, Deekline & Wizard and Rennie Pilgrem. ‘Our’ Dopamine also DJed in Fabric’s Room 2 amongst prestigious company.
